Dell’s earnings were down 48% to $351 million, 18 cents a share, on revenues down 16% to $13.4 billion and units down 12% in the January quarter, three of the single worst months since PCs were invented. Dell’s gross margin dropped from 18.7% to 17.2%.

I came back Friday a.m. fresh from the FIRE conference Meeting of the Minds planning session in Seattle with a head filled with ideas about where the IT industry is headed and what it will mean for the networking industry. Advanced Micro Devices CEO Dirk Meyer sees cloud computing as the next great investment for the enterprises and he says AMDs processors are going to big part of this type of future data center. Bull has come up with what it calls myVMBox, a built-to-order combination of VMware infrastructure on Bull NovaScale servers and StoreWay storage plus a systems administration platform supporting VMware’s vCenter and Bull’s System Manager. Everything is pre-integrated before leaving the factory, which reportedly reduces deployment time – as well as the costs involved – by a factor of 10. Bull claims it also enhanced overall infrastructure reliability.

Al writes “Microsoft demonstrated new augmented-reality software for cell-phones at the 2009 TechFest conference, which was held this week in Redmond. Instead of using GPS or WiFi triangulation, the prototype system relies entirely on scene-recognition to identify its position and add virtual objects to a video picture of the real world. TechFest is a showcase for lots of projects at Microsoft’s various research labs. Other technologies on show included Photosynth for video, an image-tracking system for handwriting, a way of refining image searches using colors, and a 3-D version of Microsoft Surface.”
