Hyper-V, Microsoft’s virtualization option for Windows Server 2008, has taken another step toward final release. Released for download by Microsoft on May 20, Release Candidate 1 adds support for Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 4 and Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1 for both x86 and x64. Support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 will be available in a future update, according to the release notes for the LIC (Linux Integration Components) add-on software. During tests of RC1, I bolted on LIC and installed SUSE, along with Windows Server 2000 SP4, to get a look at the new capabilities….

Dr. Jim writes “The good folks over at the Gartner Group have revealed the top 10 technologies that they believe will change the world over the next four years. The usual suspects including multi-core chips, virtualization, and cloud computing are on the list. Multicore servers and virtualization will mean that firms will need fewer boxes, and apps can be easily moved from box to box (and right out the door to an outsourced data center). Workplace social networks and cloud computing means that the need for a centralized IT department will go away. Firms will no longer need to own/maintain the boxes that they use to run their firm’s apps. With no need to touch a box, there will be no need to have the IT staff co-located with the boxes.”

Citrix has bought sepago GmbH’s sepagoProfile software so user profiles in XenDesktop, XenApp and Provisioning Server are integrated. Terms were not disclosed but as part of the deal the Cologne-based sepago will continue developing the product for virtualizing application provisioning for the next year and a half. Sepago specializes in application provisioning on large computer networks.

The European Commission’s spokesman Jonathan Todd called a story by the Financial Times Deutschland - claiming that the EC had reached a provisional antitrust decision against Intel - ‘irresponsible journalism.’ Todd said ‘no provisional or internal decision’ had been made and that the EC?s investigation was still ongoing.
