Dell Thursday came in with third-quarter revenues up 9% to a record $15.6 billion and earnings of 34 cents a share, up 26%. Operating income was up 13% to $829 million. Its stock slumped over 10% during and after the company’s first conference call since last August. Dell hasn’t been heard from as HP ate its lunch and Dell twitched, lost market share, and recycled its management because of that ever-so-long investigation into its books that found mischief had been done so it could meet Wall Street expectations, an investigation that delayed its financials, which it just restated. So this call to articulate the company’s turnaround plans was important.

Red Hat said Monday that the public beta of its operating system on the newfangled Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) was available. Amazon has taken to peddling resizable time, utility-style, on its own data center to other people and Red Hat arranged for its customers to run their certified apps on the thing under the Red Hat Network management service if they had a mind to. One buys whatever capacity one needs for $19 a month per account plus 21-94 cents an hour depending on the size of the instance plus bandwidth and storage fees.

The Wall Street Journal made a big noise the other day with a story saying that Google is going into the storage business - free and paid - reprising those reports of a so-called GDrive or virtual hard drive that would essentially replace the disks on all those PCs out there. Google of course is already in the storage business but GDrive, or ‘My Stuff’ or whatever it is, apparently involves a better interface that would make it feel almost local - or would if it also addresses how long it can take to upload and download stuff. The Journal’s story raised issues of privacy, copyright and competition with Microsoft’s budding Live Folders.
